A lot of women (and men, for that matter) think that wedding gowns are meant to be white and extravagant-looking. Well, before Queen Victoria dressed in a beautifully laced white gown to her wedding in 1840 – which inspired lots of brides and eventually became the traditional style – wedding gowns came in a range of colors. Bridal apparel and wedding fashion also transforms from one generation to another. So, unless you wish to conform to the western custom, you’re actually free to pick the kind of design and color you’re going to wear.
There are, of course, certain things that you need to think about in choosing the dress for your wedding:
· What’s your personal preference? Do you like to walk down the aisle like a European princess (and you’re a princess – for the day!) or would you prefer discreet and simple? Would you want a culture-inspired dress (Indian, Japanese, etc.), or theme-inspired (fairy tale, renaissance, etc.)?
· What’s your budget? The amount of money you are eager to dish out on your wedding gown would dictate the kind of fabric available to you, plus the sort of detail you could have. The more intricate the work, the more costly it becomes. However, if you’re practical, you can always rent an intricately-designed gown at a fraction of the price – since it will be worn only once anyway – and, rather, spend the money on something more practical, like a souvenir shirt or cap or personalized scarf for you and each of your bridesmaids.
· What is your body shape? The style of gown you will pick should enhance your assets. Each detail, from the neckline to the bodice, from the veil to the train, plays a part in bringing out your beauty. Decide properly.
· What’s your complexion? There are certain colors that match specific skin tones. Even if you select white, there are various kinds of white (ecru, eggshell, ivory, pinkish, bluish, etc.) that would make you look radiant.
· Which comes out well in a picture? There are lovely dresses that are absolutely stunning in person but do not really look great in photos.
Bear in mind that the right kind of wedding gown is a matter of personal choice – you choose it in the same way that you choose the wedding party apparel you would wear after the ceremonies. What’s important is that you feel comfortable in your chosen gown, and that it is “you.”
